How bad (in a global-warming sense) are forest fires?

DavidBrooks | 16 October, 2007 09:17

One of the best things about Slate, the online magazine-like-object, is its use of "explainer" features, which answer questions that crop up in the course of checking the day's news. Here's one that came up today: How much carbon does a forest fire spew into the atmosphere?

The answer (as always) is: It depends. I like this conclusion: "While you should be concerned about the growing frequency of wildfires and their attendant effects on global warming, don't lose too much sleep over the issue. ... It might be best if you conserved your angst for more readily tackled issues, such as our appalling fossil-fuel dependence."
